Objective of the Népdalok collection

Collecting Magyar nóta inevitable leads to Népdalok, since the latter form a basic part of their origin. Many orchestras playing Magyar Nóta also play some Népdalok. Such melodies, listed on the pages Csárdás and Rubato and indicated as C (N) and R (N) are also listed on the Népdalok page, indicated as N (C) and N (R). For part of these melodies a separate audio file was found for each, that is one recording played as Magyar Nóta and one played as Népdal. To illustrate differences in style, these double demo's are collected below in Népdalok & Magyar Nóta .

The majority of the Népdalok Midi's are collected from numerous sources of digital audio files and scores, available on-line. This availability might indicate that most of them belong to the better known melodies. Later we also found some books with Népdalok notations including less known melodies.

Already in view of the large spreading of sources, it seemed useful to collect them in one and the same site, especially in combination with the collection of Magyar Nóta. In addition all melodies are indexed by the Melody Catcher making them traceable for those that remember their theme but not their title. Currently the collection on Cimbalom.nl contains over 1200 Midi's of Népdalok.

To better recognize the simple monophonic Midi's, short polyphonic MP3 demo's, preferably with vocals, remain important. Unfortunately audio files of Népdalok, in particular those played by orchestras, remain scarce. Therefore we also used MP3 demos of vocals, or even of one voice only. Fortunately we found some sources that included polyphonic audio files and allowed us to use their material to produce our demo's. Especially the contribution of the largest of such sources, Messzi Tábortüzek was of great help. By all of such efforts the site currently contains almost 700 MP3 demo's of Népdalok. We keep looking for further sources enabling us to increase the number of MP3 demo's for Népdalok..

Sources of Népdalok

Midi files and notations
A good overview of sources of Népdalok is given by the New Hungarian Millenium: http://www.ujmagyarevezred.nl/nepdal.html and especially in the sites of Karoly: Magyar Népdalok I, Magyar Népdalok II and Magyar Népdalok III with a further subdivision of these melodies.

Also, as far as not available from other sources, all melodies of 3 widely available scout song-books, are included: Száz (100) Népi Játékdal, 101 Magyar Népdal and 102 Magyar Népdal "Madárka". We included a number of magyarnóta and military songs (mostly not népdal) from Book I. & II. of::
101 Magyar Népdal, Huber Sándor
- Rozsnyai Károly Publisher, Budapest c.1908.
In some cases the original spelling, used over a century ago, is retained and indicated by italics.
Finally http://www.fsz.bme.hu/mtsz/dalok/dalok.htm has been used as additional source for melodies. This Daloskönyv has full lyrics with music scores

MP3 Demo's of Vocals
In view of the limited availablity of polyphonic MP3 files of Népdalok we have also used demos of vocals for Népdalok. Here we are lucky to be able to use demos in our Népdalok from award-winning vocalist Juhos Mária from Slovakia, more of whose beautiful performances can be reached in full at http://magyarnota.com/

Our demos include samples from the Hungarian Scout Association Abroad. MP3 voice of their 50 suggested folksongs for Scouts III, all titles available on Cimbalom.nl, can be found under Gyűjtemények - népdalok http://www.kmcssz.org/

Another good source, also mainly voice only, is a nice scout collection http://nepdal.gyujtemeny.com currently with 600 népdal. This professional website has full lyrics for all népdals and songs, some with music score and many with Mp3. It is part of several training collections under gyujtemeny.com. Their "Népdal Rádio" is an excellent tool.

MP3's of orchestras and song with orchestras
We are happy to have reached an understanding with the publishers of Messzi Tábortüzek which gives us the opportunity to use their professional and highly enjoyable performances under our demos.

Music of Népdalok

The Mrs. Dömötör Kokron Margaret Foundation has published 4 sets of books to-date with several hundred selected népdalok. The books contain the music score, lyrics and each comes with a CD of the folksongs. We join with Gábor Dömötör in making these folksongs available to a wide audience worldwide. By mutual cooperation we can provide a nice sample of folksongs, accompanied by authentic and traditional folkmusic. For further details and information see Messzi Tábortüzek

Népdalok & Magyar nóta

Some melodies listed on the pages Csárdás and Rubato in fact are Népdalok. Such melodies are also listed on the Népdalok page, indicated there as N (C) or N (R)
For part of such melodies we found two different audio files, that is one recording played as Népdal (N) and one played as Magyar Nóta, that is as csárdás (C) or as rubato (R). For a comparison of differences in style these melodies are listed in the table below with links to the two different MP3 demo's for each melody.
